Living in Hancock County
Hancock County is quintessential Kentucky – hard-working people, small-town Americana, beautiful countryside and great living conditions with easy access to good jobs and quality schools. Fewer than 7,000 residents worship at 26 churches in Handcock County. The natural scenery along the Ohio River and elsewhere is enhanced by the presence of several historically significant homes, including the Pate House in Lewisport, where Abraham Lincoln argued his first court case defending himself, having been accused of operating a ferry across the Ohio River without a license (Lincoln won). It is also an area that saw battle during the Civil War, as Confederate guerrillas found shelter in Hawesville and Lewisport, a base of operations against Union steamboats plying the Ohio. Some buildings in Hawesville still bear marks of cannon fire from Union guns, and there is a large cypress tree in the center of Lewisport that purportedly dates back to the Civil War times.
While statistically considered part of the Owensboro area, Hancock County can boast of its own large employers such as Aleris, Domtar, Southwire and Century Aluminum. The Ohio River provides the northern border for the county, allowing for ample recreational and fishing opportunities – just a few of the relaxation options available to residents and visitors alike.
Driving in Hancock County
U.S. Route 60, which is 2,670 miles long and runs from Virginia to Arizona, crosses the county from east to west, bisecting Hawesville in route to Owensboro. It’s one of the options for getting to Louisville or Elizabethtown from the county as well. Predictably, US 60 is the location of many traffic accidents, especially in past three years, with nearly 40% of the county’s injury accidents taking place along that roadway. Two vulnerable intersections along US 60 are at KY 657 coming out of Lewisport (four injury accidents over three years) and at Harrison Street in Hawesville, site of three injury accidents. Other locations for multiple accidents resulting in injury include KY 69 just south of Tick Ridge Road and KY 71 between Hilldale Road and Oak Road.
There are a wide range of causes for roadway accidents in Hancock County. Sometimes things completely out of a driver’s control cause auto accidents, such as black ice, tire blowouts, a literal deer in the headlights and others. But far too often, vehicle collisions are caused by negligent behavior on the part of a driver – distracted driving, speeding, disobeying a stop sign or stop light, intoxicated driving, etc. If you are the victim of a driver whose negligence has resulted in your injury, or the injury or death of a loved one, you have the right seek compensation. The firm of Rhoads & Rhoads, with offices conveniently located in Owensboro, offers Western Kentucky’s most experienced lawyers and support staff for people who have been injured in an auto accident.
Count on Rhoads & Rhoads for Experienced Legal Representation
Rhoads & Rhoads law office has 50 years of experience in legal representation for a broad range of personal injury law, which typically involves the negligence (in legal parlance, a failure to provide a level of care that a prudent individual would provide) of someone else resulting in injury or death for a victim or victims. In addition to motor vehicle accidents, Rhoads & Rhoads helps families in Western Kentucky who have suffered brain injury, which can be life-altering in more extensive ways than standard injuries, and sickness or death due to defective drugs, medicines or other products, called product liability.
Rhoads & Rhoads also represents Hancock County residents who are victims of nursing home negligence, where a care facility has failed to live up to its obligation to care for your loved ones, and premises liability, referring to situations where someone is injured or killed on someone else’s property.
Social Security disability disputes are another specialty area, as clients due benefits from Social Security can often find that securing those funds can be a difficult and frustrating process. Construction and industrial accidents is an area centered around workplace injury, including workers compensation benefits filing. Medical malpractice, the area most commonly associated with personal injury law, is when a medical professional is thought or is proven to have acted (or not acted) in a way that causes injury or even death. Wrongful death litigation involves compensation when someone else’s negligence results in the death of a loved one. Rhoads & Rhoads attorneys work in these cases to secure funds for you that cover the myriad of expenses and financial pitfalls, both short and long-term, that come with the death of a family member.
