Living in Christian County
Christian County is the largest county by area in Western Kentucky and the second largest in the state overall. The 72,000 working residents of the county are employed in a variety of occupations. There’s a good chance they work on or around Fort Campbell if they’re in the southern part of the county; they may be at Ebonite (where they manufacture 60% of the world’s bowling balls), the Walmart Distribution Center or Martinrea around Hopkinsville. Up north near Crofton, Apex, Fearsville or anywhere in the county for that matter, they may farm the land. There are a lot of farms in Christian County – 1,150 of them. Farms in Christian County are always among Kentucky’s leaders when it comes to corn, soybean and winter wheat production. Agri-business is big business and it helps the county stay below a 5% unemployment rate.
Christian County is home to hard-working people of faith. Rhoads & Rhoads understands this because we, too, are hard-working people of faith. Our wonderful office manager, Diane Baker, grew up in Hopkinsville. Jerry Rhoads served in the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell and Chris Rhoads was born in Christian County. With 50 years of experience representing clients and providing legal counsel for the injured throughout Western Kentucky, the personal injury attorneys of Rhoads & Rhoads are who you need at your side after an accident.
Driving in Christian County
Christian County gets the majority of its traffic through Hopkinsville, Interstate 24 and Fort Campbell. Between the various company operations based in Hopkinsville and the role of Interstate 24 as a major thoroughfare between St. Louis and Atlanta, a steady stream of semi-trucks drive through the county daily. Fort Campbell, home to over 26,000 military service members and civilian employees (along with 40,000 family members) is a community unto itself – it’s the third largest U.S. Army base (by population) in the world.
Although the fiscal advantages for the county to have steady semi-truck traffic are tremendous, it does come with risk. In the past three years alone, 88 car wrecks and accidents involving semi-trucks occurred on county roads and resulted in injury, nearly all of them in one of three areas:
- Along Interstate 24 between Ky. Road 68 and Clarksville, Tennessee
- Near Fort Campbell, including one fatal accident
- Industrial areas in and around Hopkinsville, including one fatal accident
Causes of Accidents in Christian County
Most car accidents involve at least one of the following common factors – speeding, inattentive driving or driving while intoxicated. In addition to these factors, trucks have higher incidences of tire or brake failure (cited in over 150 accidents in Kentucky in 2017) and issues with cargo (over 200 accidents with “load securement” or “oversize load” cited as reasons). Adding to the greater danger posed by semi-truck accidents, the injured typically have to deal with corporate lawyers who represent the business that owns the truck – a far cry from what you might face with the a typical fender bender, where you’re likely to simply exchange insurance information and go on about your day.
Motorcyclists were involved in over 80 injury accidents in the county over the past three years, mostly in Hopkinsville or around Fort Campbell, as motorcycles are a popular transportation option for military service members. The lack of protection for riders, coupled with the lack of a mandatory helmet law in Kentucky, means riders risk a higher rate of injury.
Overall, over 1,400 injury accidents on Christian County roadways happened in the past three years, including 39 accidents resulting in a fatality. Too often, those injured in an accident or the bereaved family members of someone killed in an accident are left confused and feeling hopeless when dealing with insurance companies. This is especially true when the accident has been caused by a business-owned vehicle and companies look to protect their own interests, often at the expense of your own.
At Rhoads & Rhoads Law Office, we have extensive experience representing people injured or killed in car, truck and motorcycle accidents, having won settlements of $2.1 million and $1.8 million in recent cases. We protect the rights of the injured in Christian County and throughout Western Kentucky. We will help you through this difficult time and get you the financial recovery you deserve.
