37 Million Fire Extinguishers Recalled After Failure To Discharge

On November 2, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of about 37.8 million plastic handled fire extinguishers made by Kidde. The recall claims the fire extinguishers, “can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.”

The agency said there has been 391 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment, including one death, 16 injuries and about 91 reports of property damage. In 2014, there was a death involving a fiery vehicle crash and first responders blamed the faultiness of the fire extinguisher.

Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall Information

This expansive recall encompasses several models of fire extinguishers produced between 1973 and 2017, including models listed in previous recalls. The fire extinguishers were sold at many popular retailers, including The Home Depot, Menards, Montgomery Ward, Sears, Walmart and other retailers nationwide, and online at Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and other online retailers for between $12 and $50 and for about $200 for model XL 5MR. The faulty fire extinguishers may have also been sold with commercial trucks, recreational vehicles like RVs and trailers, boats and personal watercrafts.
